Turtles often go unnoticed, yet they play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. To raise awareness and gather valuable data, a special three-day Turtle Samples event was held in March 2025 at Wekiwa Springs State Park and Kelly Park. Volunteers, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts came together to make a difference. 

The event spanned two days at Wekiwa Springs and one at Kelly Park. Participants ventured into the crystal-clear waters to capture, identify, and record data on turtles for Turtle Survival Alliance research. The outcomes were impressive! Over three days, 179 turtles were caught, including recaptures and new finds. From Loggerhead Musks to Florida Softshells, turtles of all kinds were safely identified and recorded, contributing to crucial research. 

Why Turtle Conservation Matters

The Turtle Samples event exemplified the power of collective action in conservation. Volunteers, such as Disney interns, trainees from the Diamondback Terrapin project, and local organizations like Wekiva River Aquatic Preserve, played vital roles. Together, they ensured the turtles’ safety while collecting valuable data. 

Thanks to the support of Wekiwa Springs State Park, Kelly Park-Rock Springs, and other local partners, the Turtle Samples event was a resounding success. Every captured and documented turtle contributes to ongoing research, aiming to better understand and protect turtle populations.
